Artist Statement
Sharon’s practice is concerned with the exploration of memory in relation to personal, political and
cultural issues centred on conflict and loss.
Drawing from various source material including archive photographs, film and
television her aim is to
produce a body of work which conveys meaning whilst remaining ambiguous and
thought provoking. Memory may be individual or collective and
by providing a visual
symbolism through a variety of media Sharon hopes to raise questions and provoke
reaction in the viewer to the fragile nature of
memory.
Sharon’s current body
of work is produced in response to research into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
(PTSD) in war veterans returning from conflict in Afghanistan and Iraq. PTSD is
a severe anxiety disorder symptoms often include irritability, flashbacks, and
re- living traumatic events. Someone with PTSD may experience feelings of
isolation; guilt and have difficulty concentrating. Symptoms may not manifest
themselves for months or even years after experiencing trauma.
Using a multi media approach Sharon’s aim is
to convey a number of ephemeral, oblique and fragmented representations in
response to personal testimonies and sourced photographs.
